7. Finger & Palm Holds
Balance Your Body, One Finger at a Time
Introduction:
Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) is a gentle energy art that restores harmony to your body, mind, and spirit. One of its most accessible techniques is holding each finger, thumb, and palm. Each finger corresponds to multiple organ energies and emotional states. By practicing these holds, you can relieve tension, balance your energy, and improve physical and emotional health — anytime, anywhere.
How to Perform Finger, Thumb, and Palm Holds:
- Sit comfortably with your spine straight.
- Take the finger, thumb, or palm you want to hold. Use the opposite hand to wrap around it gently.
- Breathe slowly and deeply, relaxing your shoulders and jaw.
- Hold for 1 minute per finger or until you can feel a pulsation, or longer if you wish.
- Switch hands and repeat.
What Each Finger and the Palm Represents:

Thumb – Worry, Digestion & Grounding Energy
The thumb relates to worry, anxiety, and overthinking, and harmonises the Stomach and Spleen energies. When this energy is out of balance, you may notice digestive discomfort, bloating, reflux, fatigue after eating, sugar cravings, or a tendency to ruminate mentally. Physically, it may relate to stomach tension, poor nutrient absorption, or low steady energy.
Holding the thumb gently helps calm the mind, settle the nervous system, and support healthy digestion. It promotes grounding, emotional stability, and a sense of inner reassurance.
Common issues associated with thumb imbalance:
* Anxiety and excessive worry
* Digestive upset or bloating
* Fatigue
* Headaches & back of head discomforts
* Poor concentration
* Blood sugar instability
* Skin problems

Index Finger – Fear, Kidneys & Vital Energy
The index finger corresponds to fear, insecurity, and survival stress, and harmonises Kidney and Bladder energies. Kidney energy is your core vitality and resilience. When depleted, you may feel exhausted, anxious, easily startled, or lacking confidence.
Physically, imbalance may show as lower back discomfort, urinary issues, cold hands and feet, adrenal fatigue patterns, or chronic stress tension.
Holding the index finger supports courage, strengthens resilience, and restores a sense of safety and stability in the body.
Common issues associated with index finger imbalance:
* Fear or chronic anxiety
* Joint & Muscle Pain
* Urinary or bladder concerns
* Exhaustion
* Digestion & Elimination
* Stress-related tension

Middle Finger – Anger, Liver & Detox Energy
The middle finger relates to anger, frustration, irritability, and resentment, and harmonises the Liver and Gallbladder energies. The liver plays a key role in detoxification, circulation, and smooth energy flow throughout the body.
When this energy is stuck, you may notice headaches, tight neck and shoulders, eye strain, PMS symptoms, digestive sluggishness, or emotional irritability.
Holding the middle finger helps release tension, improve circulation, and promote emotional flexibility and clear decision-making.
Common issues associated with middle finger imbalance:
* Irritability or mood swings
* Headaches or migraines
* Tight shoulders and neck
* Hormonal imbalances
* Detox sluggishness
* Circulation problems

Ring Finger – Grief, Lungs & Elimination
The ring finger corresponds to grief, sadness, and difficulty letting go, harmonising Lung and Large Intestine energies. These energies govern breathing, skin health, immunity, and elimination.
When imbalanced, you may experience shallow breathing, respiratory weakness, skin issues, constipation, or lingering emotional heaviness.
Holding the ring finger supports deep breathing, strengthens immunity, and helps release what no longer serves you — physically and emotionally.
Common issues associated with ring finger imbalance:
* Grief or sadness
* Asthma or respiratory weakness
* Skin conditions
* Constipation & Digestive Issues
* Immune challenges
* Tinnitus

Little Finger – Overwhelm, Heart & Emotional Balance
The little finger relates to overwhelm, nervousness, and trying too hard, harmonising Heart and Small Intestine energies. This energy governs circulation, emotional clarity, and the ability to discern what serves you.
When out of balance, symptoms may include heart palpitations, insomnia, nervous tension, excessive sweating, poor circulation, or mental overload.
Holding the little finger helps calm the heart, ease anxiety, and promote emotional clarity and better sleep.
Common issues associated with little finger imbalance:
* Nervousness or overwhelm
* Heart palpitations and Blood Pressure
* Sleep disturbances
* Circulatory issues
* Sore throat
* Bloating
* Mental overload
* Bone and nervous system problems.

Palm – Total Energy Integration & Diaphragm Flow
The palm represents overall energy harmony, integrating all organ flows. It relates strongly to the diaphragm, solar plexus, and central energy pathways in Jin Shin Jyutsu. The palm helps regulate breathing rhythm, nervous system balance, and whole-body vitality.
When palm energy is out of sync, you may feel scattered, fatigued, emotionally reactive, or physically out of balance without a clear cause.
Holding the palm brings the entire system into coherence — calming the nervous system, improving breath depth, and restoring centred vitality.
Common issues associated with palm imbalance:
* General fatigue & low energy
* Nervous system overload
* Shallow breathing & Breathing difficulties
* Digestive tension
* Feeling “off” or ungrounded, mental fog
* Cold feet (even in warm weather)
